#TaxTipTuesday - When is my tax return due?

Do you know when your tax return is due? The due date for your return depends on how you answer the 3 questions below.

Do you know when to lodge?

  1. What type of tax return are you lodging? - i.e. an individual tax return, partnership, trust or company return;

  2. Do you have any tax returns outstanding, or have you been penalised in the past for lodging your tax return late?;

  3. Who is lodging your tax return - are your loding the return yourself or are you using a tax agent (like Ezetax)?.Your average rate of tax is the total amount of tax that you have paid divided by the total income you have received.

If you are lodging your tax return yourself?

If you are loding your return yourself, generally it is due by 31 October (for individuals and trusts) and 28 February (for companies).  However, if a tax agent is preparing and lodging your returns for you, then generally you will recieve an extension.

"If you are lodging your return yourself it is due by 31 October. "

If you are lodging your tax return through an agent (like Ezetax)?

Included below are the due dates for lodgement for the 2018 tax year (1 July 2017 through to 30 June 2018) if lodging through a tax agent.  It is important that you check your due date with your accountant and the dates below are a guide only:

Due Dates for Individual/Trust Tax Returns

  • 31 October 2018 - if you have one or more prior year tax returns outstanding;

  • 31 March 2019- if your last tax return results in a tax liability of $20,000 or more; and

  • 15 May 2019 - if none of the above apply.

Due Dates for Partnership Tax Returns

  • Depends on the earliest due date of the partners' tax return.

Due Dates for Small Company Tax Returns

  • 31 October 2018 - if you have one or more prior year tax returns outstanding;

  • 31 March 2019 - if you had more than $2million in total revenue; and

  • 15 May 2019 - if none of the above apply.

Remember, it is always important to ensure you are up to date and on top of your due dates for lodgement.  Late lodgement of your tax returns can result in penalties and general interest charges.
